통진고등학교의 동아리는 크게 자율동아리와 정규동아리<ref>공식 명칭은 교과동아리이지만 학생들은 대부분 정규동아리라 한다.</ref>로 나뉜다.
 
2018년까지는 기본적으로 1개의 정규동아리에 가입하며 원한다면 2개의 자율동아리에 추가로 가입할수 있다.
 
2019년 입학생부터는 자율동아리 가입이 1개로 제한되었다.
 
동아리는 크게 격주 금요일 5,6교시에 활동하는 정규동아리와 임의의 시간을 정해 활동하는 자율동아리로 나뉘며, 특별한 경우 정규와 자율간의 이동은 없는 편이다.
